British Soldier Killed In Afghan Bomb Blast
A British soldier has been killed in an explosion while on patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has announced.

His death brings to 385 the number of UK military personnel who have died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of operations there in 2001.

"The soldier was serving with 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment as a part of Combined Force Lashkar Gah," the MoD said in a statement.

"He was killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Babaji."

A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lt Col Gordon Mackenzie, said: "We are greatly saddened by the news of this soldier's death.

"We will keep him and his loved ones in our thoughts as we carry on with our important mission. His loss is not in vain."

The MoD said the soldier's next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

His death comes six days after another British serviceman was shot dead by insurgents in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand.

He was named as 21-year-old Private Matthew Haseldin from Settle, North Yorkshire who was serving with 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment.

His body will be repatriated to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.
